John Travis

John Travis
John was born in Oldham, Lancashire, into a Primitive Methodist family,
in 1952.
In 1960 the family moved to Ripponden.
John was educated at Sowerby Bridge Grammar School and Sheffield University.
He worked in Road Haulage specialising in hazardous chemicals retiring
in 2007 before his luck ran out.
Married to the long suffering Lesley in 1982 and father to the unimpressed
Joshua and Jacob.
Apart from preaching John’s interests range from poetry to architecture
and good food. He played rugby for Halifax vandals and Old Rishworthians
and later refereed but now concentrates on long distance walking.
He believes that the King James’ version of the Bible is the jewel
in the crown of English literature, and holds that the NIV is the work
of an iIliterate, probably enjoyed by Walt Disney.
It is believed he once preached from a New Testament text, but there
is no verifiable evidence of this.
His services tend not to include choruses and there is no specific time
for which he will preach;
‘Stand up, say what you have to say, then sit down.’
Desert Island Book - Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne.
