Baptised in a Wesleyan Chapel; date unknown but almost certainly 1930.
Sporadic connection with Sunday School 1935 to 1941.
Leader of opposition in Sunday School 1940-41.
Boys’ Brigade 1941-1947 (part of team which won Yorkshire Gym Competition
two years running).
Started attending evening services 1944-5 – Rev Albert McLean.
Joined choir and became member of Methodist Church 1946.
Career as Sunday School Teacher 1947 to 1956 – superintendent 1956
to 1962.
Persuaded to go ‘on note’ 1949 (Rev Frank Amery).
Fully accredited Dec 1951.
Lay Secretary District Overseas Committee 1962-1979 (six year rule?). Active
in LPMA 1961 to 2004.
Secretary Aggregate Arrangements 1985 – almost recovered now.
Conference Arrangements Committee 1978 (Bradford – Rev Ralph Fennel).
Nothing surprising there then.
Otherwise: Married to Sheila (1953) (Captain of 1st Elland Girls’ Brigade
1962-69; Women’s Own Sec; Network etc).
Two sons: Colin – Secretary Southgate Church Council, BB etc.,
Michael – Local Preacher, Harpenden and Redbourn Circuit.
Apprentice Engineer 1944-50. Engineering draughtsman 1950-52. Trainee
Patent Agent 1952-1960.
Chartered Engineer – Fellow of Institution of Mechanical Engineers
1961.
Chartered Patent Agent (now ‘Attorney’) 1961 to date.
President of Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys 1991-2 (Centenary
year of Charter).
Half hour chat with HM The Queen June 1991 – she seemed scared;
called at the Palace in 1996 to collect OBE – only to be worn with
full morning dress – chance will be a fine thing.
Still serving the Lord as a Local Preacher and waiting for my P45.
